Overview

Getting support in Multan

Most families in Multan speak Saraiki at home. In the 2023 census, close to two in three people in Multan district gave Saraiki as their mother tongue, and Urdu and Punjabi were each spoken by about one in six.

The main public option for psychiatric care is the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Sciences at Nishtar Hospital, the teaching hospital of Nishtar Medical University. Its ward handles outpatients and inpatients, including people with drug addiction, and trains psychiatrists and clinical psychologists. That is where to go if you may need medication, admission or an urgent psychiatric assessment.

For regular talking therapy, online sessions can sit alongside that care or stand on their own. Safe Healing therapists meet adults 18 and over one-to-one on Google Meet, in Urdu or English, so you do not need to plan a trip to a clinic. The therapists shown on this page come from our live directory. If you are thinking about ending your life or feel unsafe, contact emergency services first.

The law in Punjab

Mental Health Ordinance 2001, as adopted by the Punjab Mental Health (Amendment) Act 2014

After health became a provincial subject, Punjab took over the national Mental Health Ordinance 2001 through a 2014 Act, which also provides for a Punjab Mental Health Authority. The ordinance sets rules for voluntary and involuntary treatment, caps how long a person can be detained, lets patients appeal an involuntary admission, and includes protections for confidentiality and informed consent.
