Overview

Getting support in Quetta

Quetta is a city of several languages. In the 2023 census, about six in ten people in Quetta district gave Pashto as their mother tongue, around 15 percent spoke Brahui, and Balochi, Punjabi and Urdu were among the others.

The main public service is the Balochistan Institute of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences, listed by the provincial health department as the Psychiatry Institute of Behavior & Mental Sciences. It is a tertiary psychiatric hospital that treats conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression. Talking therapy has been harder to find: a psychotherapist writing in The Express Tribune in 2019 said she could not find a practising clinical psychologist or psychotherapist in Quetta.

Online therapy does not depend on who practises locally. Safe Healing sessions are one-to-one video calls on Google Meet for adults 18 and over, in Urdu or English, so you can talk from home with a therapist based anywhere in Pakistan. Therapists appear on this page from our live directory. Online sessions are not for emergencies; if you or someone near you is in danger, call for help first.

The law in Balochistan

Balochistan Mental Health Act 2019

Balochistan’s own mental health law (Act No. IX of 2019) allows care and treatment on a voluntary basis, requires written informed consent before investigation or treatment, and keeps a patient’s identity out of the press unless they choose otherwise. Anyone who attempts suicide must be assessed by an approved psychiatrist and treated if they have a mental disorder.
